Rugby 7's And The Future !
Rugby 7's is a sport that is fast becoming popular since the 1970's when Fiji and New Zealand used to dominate the competition which was mostly held in Hong Kong the mecca of rugby 7's.
With the announcement of it's inclusion into the 2016 Rio Olympics , top rugby nations are competing for the 16 spots and ultimately the Gold medal let alone being part of Olympic history. The HSBC World Rugby 7's has been tough during the 2014-2015 series where the top 4 teams namely Fiji, NZ, South Africa and England have gained automatic qualification to the Rio Olympics. A clear indication of this tough competition was the crowning of underdog USA during the 2015 London 7's.
Come the 2016 Rio Olympics exactly 1 year from now, no team can be underestimated. Any of the top 8 teams could be winning the Gold medal.
Over the next 4 years and beyond, Rugby 7's will be massive in terms of competition. Sydney has been given the green light to host the Australian leg of the HSBC World Rugby 7's Series for the next 4 years taking over from Gold Coast. The Rio Olympics Rugby 7's will be held in 2016. Gold Coast will host the 2018 Commonwealth Games where Rugby 7's will be played. Also in 2018, San Francisco will host the Rugby 7's World Cup and Tokyo in the 2020 Olympics.
Young players should be competing more in rugby 7's events in their various countries so that one day they could be competing in the Olympics let alone the IRB Series and Commonwealth Games.
